Coming to South Carolina from a small town in Maryland is not an easy transition. I knew a few other Freshman from my high school, but they were just as dazed and confused about college as I was. I decided to rush because I wanted to be in an organization that would help me find my way, and the girls in Phi Mu came to my rescue.
Every year each new member gets a “Big”, an older girl in the sorority that helps introduce them to the chapter and answers any questions about the new world of sorority life. As it turned out, both my Big and GrandBig were from Maryland too and one even went to the same High School as me! It was such a relief to be able to talk to people who went through exactly what I was going through and knew what to say and do to make me feel at home. They took me under their wings and introduced me to more people, activities, and places then I ever would have imagined. They are the first people I tell when I get good news and the last people I talk to before going to sleep (if they manage to stay up as late as me). We do not go a day without seeing, speaking, and laughing with each other.
Without Phi Mu I don’t know how I would have gotten through this past year. It brought me to my best friends, Dance Marathon, and my future roommates. I cannot wait for next year to welcome even more sisters and be able to help them like the older sisters of Phi Mu helped me!
